The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) again brings Chinese tunes of the highest
standard to Russia, following its popular tour in 2013.
On 16 February, the HKCO performs a wide-ranging repertoire at St Petersburg’s Jaani
Kirik (St John’s Church) under the baton of its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor
Yan Huichang. Traditional and contemporary pieces, such as Three Variations on Yangguan
and The Silk Road Fantasia Suite, are specially arranged to represent different musical
styles from China’s regions.
The concert at the Organ and Chamber Music Hall, Sochi, on 20 February is a joint performance
with conductor and violinist Yuri Bashmet and the Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra. On
21 February the two orchestras perform at the Winter Theatre with Yuri Bashmet alongside
Yan Huichang. The programme features the premiere of a new work from Russian composer
Alexander Tchaikovsky and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Chinese contemporary composer
Tan Dun. The concerts in Sochi form part of the Winter International Arts Festival.
