Datong: The Chinese Utopia
Dazzling three-act chamber opera gets its European premiere – part of the Hong Kong Music Series
Richmond Theatre, The Green, Richmond, Surrey TW9 1QJ, Thurs 2.30pm, Fri 7.30pm
This contemporary three-act opera is a wonderful opportunity to be transported to another
time and place with fabulous voices and music.
Datong brings to life episodes in the life of pioneering Chinese feminist, Kang Tongbi –
daughter of 20th century Chinese scholar Kang Youwei, author of a famous treatise on utopia
and human equality.
Featuring a stellar cast of Hong Kong’s home grown classical vocalists and musicians at the
outset of their international careers, Datong is performed with the Hong Kong New Music
Ensemble under the baton of Lio Kuokman, former assistant conductor of the Philadelphia
Orchestra and a laureate at the prestigious Evgeny Svetlanov Conducting Competition 2014.
Brought to Europe by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong Arts
Festival, Datong played to sold-out houses at the Hong Kong City Hall in March 2015 and this
will be its European premiere.
